Vintage Oahu Tonemaster Lap Steel Guitar
I am thinning my collection and especially instruments that my children would likely not enjoy or appreciate.
This one came to me through an estate, so I really don’t know its age.  When I got it, it was not working at all. It had probably been stored and unused for decades.  It was easy to make everything good again.  Neither of the knobs would move. The pickup did not pick up.  The nut holding the outside of the ¼ inch input was missing.
My intent was not to “restore” the instrument but to return it to its best possible playing condition.  First, I treated the electronics with “DeOxit” , an excellent electronics cleaner.  I had a nut in my collection for the input. Before reassembly, I used a product to restore moisture to the wood. The fret board was terribly dry. Both the body and the fret board were much better after this treatment.
Afterwards I reassembled the guitar and strung it using strings from my spares to approximate the specs for the C6 tuning.
After all the parts and pieces were back together, I tested and found that all functions had been restored. The knobs turned easily and worked. The pickup was set a little two high on the treble strings so I lowered it a bit. Everything worked and sounded good.
You see from the pictures that the checkerboard purfling on the neck is not on the instrument.  The original unbroken pieces are included for the next owner to apply. I did not have the type of glue that I thought necessary for original condition.
I removed some of the rust from the tuning pegs.  I treated the chrome with #OOOO steel wool to bring out the shine.
Included will be three steel finger picks, a fourteen foot long ¼ inch cord, and two vintage steel slides. There is a flat slide marked “student” and a rather small sized cylindrical slide convex at one end and concave at the other. That one is marked “Oahu”.
The case is obviously original. Its condition is very good for something as old as I am (71). The springs in the latches are not working, but it does latch securely.
One concern is that it has only one of the original control knobs.  The other is that both volume and tone controls seem to work, but I can’t really tell any difference in tone. Still, tone can be controlled through your amp.
